MAKE IT A GREAT DAY: On the deck

This beautiful day, sunny, clear blue sky, and 67 degrees has The Haasienda perched on the deck to savor every moment.

The two Seniors and Bailey are next to me in their sphinx pose and Deeds is running all over the backyard with Harrigan in tow. He prances and hops about while you can see the sophisticated Harrigan urge him to act nine years old.

The wind has been incredibly strong with forceful gusts these past twenty-four hours. This morning, my dumpster, at the curb for pickup, was blown over (or knocked over) and a broken plastic lawn chair I’d set out was in Mama Kay’s front yard.

I need to do some things in my study but I don’t want to leave the deck. I guess I could bring research out but the sun is so bright I can barely read the screen on my phone.

I am torn over which one of two events to attend this evening. The University of Dayton Symphony Orchestra has a concert on campus and Kettering Fairmont High School’s jazz program has a concert. I’d love to see both but will need to select one venue.

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY: Valentine’s Day, 2023

The sky was very patriotic with its faded red, white, and blue hues glowing from the east. The day promises wind, but highs nearing 60 degrees. Tomorrow is forecast with the day rounding out at 61 degrees. Perfect.

Last evening while teaching a Colorado student via Zoom, we had a major incident: Erma surpassed her patience with Deeds. I don’t know what happened but there was an altercation just outside my study that resulted in Deeds crying and running into the study. He was yelping for all it was worth. Immediately, Chief ran to his side and began examining his little shadow, as did Bailey and Harrigan. Harrigan even lowered herself into maternal instincts and was kissing on him. I managed to get hold of the little colonel and held him until he calmed down. I could find no injuries or wet spots on his fur where Erma may have attacked, so I don’t know if he was just startled, or if he was being a big drama queen as reported by his foster mom. LOL. She texted me one day that Deeds and his brother were fighting and Deeds took to his bed crying but seemed to be more dramatic than hurt. I am thinking the same thing. He didn’t seem to be skittish around Erma later in the evening, or this morning.

Today is my baby sister’s 50th birthday. I still recall all the events of that Wednesday in 1973. We brought her home that Saturday morning.

It’s a busy day with some telephone interviews, a Zoom conference at Noon on Grey Gardens which has always fascinated me, Taco Tuesday, and then a late afternoon and full evening of teaching. Col. Deeds follows Erma’s example of being the first to exit past the gate into the living room to be the official greeter.

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY: Monday with its spring attire

This Monday has been gorgeous. Comfortable weather and bright, sunny skies have made this mid-February day seem like early April. Of course, in Ohio, we could have a blizzard in early April.

I have been watching documentaries, researching, and resting most of the day to ease the gut discomfort and what feels like a pinched nerve affecting my left shoulder and arm. I’ve dealt with a pinched nerve years ago and it was not an enjoyable time.

At 4 PM, I begin teaching a full evening until 11 PM with one break. The college auditions are moving right along, and two have already confirmed their choices.

DAILY DEEDS: Monday with Col. Deeds

Deeds has been doing a fantastic job of going outside to potty in the backyard with the other four. Sometimes, he leads the way and gets surpassed by the others who are much faster, or he gets trapped in the back of the crowd by a breezy jungle of wagging tails.

The little chap is so affectionate and tends to look me straight in the eye for the longest time. Harrigan looks me in the eyes, too, but I assume hers is an attempt to mesmerize me with her powers or to put a hex on me.

Here are a few photos of Deeds, today. The best is where he was giving Chief tons of kisses.

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY: Happy birthday, Mr. Lincoln

Some of my Lincoln collection displayed in the front room.

The Lincoln bust was given to me by my uncle, Ron Barmes, in 1972.

The first book I purchased in March 1973, at the Lincoln boyhood home in southern Indiana. It was my very first Lincoln book.

DAILEY DEEDS: Sunday morning spoon

At 4 AM, Deeds woke me for potty time. For the 11 PM “last call,” I carried him to the edge of the deck, set him down, and watched him scurry down the steps to follow the others into the yard. At 4 AM, I simply opened the door, set him down and he took off for the yard.

Yay!

I leave Deeds on the bed when I prepare their meals. This morning, I returned to the closed gate where the older four were waiting and I found Deeds standing on the long hospital table next to the bed, looking over the gate. The toddler stage has begun.

This morning he is full of energy after Erma excused herself from the morning cereal milk, Deeds continued licking for any missed spots and then grabbed the spoon.

DAILY DEEDS: One week in

I get a lot of questions regarding Deeds on social media and it is difficult to respond since the queries appear in different posts. I thought I would create another blog category, “Daily Deeds.”

Here we are, one week and one day into Deeds living with all of us in The Haasienda and I can honestly say it is going quite well. The Sisters, Bailey and Harrigan, though still territorial at times, have softened a great deal and now accept kisses from Deeds. Erma is loving and tolerant but appears a tad skittish at times, hesitant to come inside if Deeds is already at the threshold to greet her. Chief likes the attention and parades past the exuberant Deeds who jumps on him when he enters from outside. Deeds loves the older four and wants to be a part of their pack. It will happen when he becomes one of them.

Potty training is going well due to no small part of my former student and her husband, ReBecca and Shane, who rescued Deeds and his brother. Last night, Deeds woke me at 3 AM to go potty, and he went about his business quickly and was back in bed in record time. I, on the other hand, was wide awake until 5 AM. Today, with all three outdoor sessions, Deeds went right to action and was back at the deck’s door before the others.

My little shadow, usually accompanied by Erma, never allows me out of his sight. I am getting ready to head to supper with Mama Kay and Mary, and I know he will be fine. I have tried corralling him in the bathroom, but he manages to escape and seems perfectly content hanging with the others if, in fact, that’s what he does.

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY: Friday & Saturday

I started this blog post at 10:30 AM, Friday… it is now, 12:25 AM, Saturday.

The warmer weather of the previous days has abandoned The Miami Valley, today, but beginning Sunday we shall be revisited by temperatures from 53 degrees to 67 degrees.

I just received a notice from Amazon that my order, due to arrive today, will be here tomorrow. When I ordered the item on Wednesday, Amazon promised it would be delivered today. The minute I order, believing the item is expected the following day, I receive a message that it is to arrive the day after the originally said arrival day. This is often the case with Amazon this past year. I am studying other options as this is not satisfactory to me.

It was a semi-productive day with lots and not lots accomplished. Amy Kress arrived after 2 PM to meet Deeds. The Kress and Bomholt families are now the last of the studio families who knew Flyer and Logan and were with me during the arrivals of Chief and Navi, Bailey and Harrigan, Neko, Clyde, and now, Deeds. Amy would work on training with Chief, Navi, Bailey, and Harrigan during Katie and Sarah’s lessons.

I had intended to accomplish more with research, but documentaries, naps, and dogs interfered.

Tomorrow’s docket is clean except for the post-Mass dinner with Mama Kay and any others who might join us.

I think this post offering will serve as both Friday’s and Saturday’s posts. Now, it is off to bed with a 14-week-old following me for some snuggle time.

Always make it a great day!

MY DAY: Deeds reading up on Dayton history

Deeds has been helping me locate specific research on Barney & Smith passenger cars.

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY: Warm, windy, wild

I walked to the Kettering-Moraine Library, on Far Hills Avenue, on the other side of my exceptionally large block, to retrieve two books I had ordered on the Barney & Smith Company. I need information on their passenger cars. The weather is menacing with dark clouds, great winds, and the suggestion that all hell could break loose at any moment.

I returned home to a terrific response from The Fab Five or The Haasienda Quintet. I caught it on video so others could see what a typical greeting is like for me. Now, it’s extra sweet with Deeds holding his own in a field of giants.

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY: Always do your best… energy!

I love folks who have energy. Not just physical energy, but mental energy, emotional (the good kind) energy, spiritual energy, and creative energy. The mental and creative energies are my favorite.

Mother not only modeled the five energy categories, but she also encouraged, even insisted we engage them depending on where we were in life and what we were doing.

“Always do your best” was a substantial mantra that was oft repeated and insisted. If we did our best, she was satisfied. And she always knew when our finest was not offered. Then, we knew we would be challenged for the next round when we were to do our best. I followed that example in my own parenting and I was amazed at how much responsibility it placed upon the child to learn, grow, and seek the next awaiting adventure or chapter.

If we complained about a situation, we were asked, “What can you do to make it better?” If we presented no solution, the discussion promptly ended. “If you cannot make it better or find other results, stop complaining.” In this, Mother was a rock and expected only positive thinking and positive energy to lead the course. As we got older, she would smile and say, “Stop bitching.”

Since I was 8 ½ and 10 years older than Dena and Destin, I was in college through most of their formative years. I saw them a good deal, but we never really had much in common until they entered high school and college. We grew up in two separate spheres of the family’s one world.

Someone once asked me if Mother would have been “tough” had she not been forced into single parenthood.

Oh, yes! Mother was precise and required much from us. It was also a time when there were expectations for good social manners, polished table manners, politeness, and being responsible for our actions. Mother always smiled. Seldom did she pass a moment when she wasn’t smiling and then, her eyes smiled. When something occurred and there was no smile, we knew the set jaw and pursed lips meant both guns were smoking and we had it coming. Our reprimands were often in the form of a question, “Was this the best way to accomplish this?” or “Where was your brain when you were contemplating this?” or “Did you do your best?”

I will forever be grateful for Mother encouraging our creative energies. She was always doing artwork for our school teachers that were to be used in the classroom. They were painstakingly created and executed, and as her son, it was great to hear the exclamations of appreciation. Mother was extremely organized and everything she performed was meticulous. The same was expected of us – be prepared and be thorough. “Don’t half-ass it,” would be a familiar phrase through our teen years.

We were encouraged to think outside the box, and we did. As a teacher and parent, I had a small taped-up box that students or sons were to kick out of the room when I wanted them to think outside the box. I also kept a larger, knee-high box for them to stand in for a few seconds before stepping out of it. If we ever said, “I would like to try/do…” we were immediately asked, “Have you thought it through?” followed by, “Then get at it.”

And I always will appreciate, “Figure it out!” We knew we could still come to her if we got stuck, but she was not about to think for us. She would coach us but never do it for us.

Dena and I have an entrepreneurial spirit, but it was our baby brother who used his best. When Destin was four years old, he wanted to make some money. Using my old Kool-Aid container, my sister’s playset table and chair, and an empty stationery box for cash, the lad was in business in our side yard facing Ninth Street, selling Kool-Aid and bags of popcorn. Mother supplied the sign and the two ingredients for his casual menu, but the boy was a good businessman.

Within a few days, he had regular customers and was making a lot of money for a four-year-old boy. Richard Merritt, a legendary educator and administrator for many years in Elwood, was probably Destin’s best customer, followed by Grandpa Leroy who cleaned up the hours-old popcorn and finished off the warm Kool-Aid. Before Noon, Mr. Merritt’s red jeep would pull up alongside the Ninth Street curb and he would hop out to ask Destin questions before pulling out a one dollar bill for a cup of Kool-Aid and a bag of popcorn. “Keep the change,” he always said. Destin always got a $.96 tip from Mr. Merritt. Most adults would give him $.50 or $1 and insist he kepy the change.

By middle school, Destin was washing and detailing cars and mowing yards. He may have had a part-time job at a local business, as Dena and I worked throughout high school, but I don’t recall. Destin was his own businessman, and he carried that entrepreneurial spirit with him to the end of his life. While living and teaching in Fowler, he had his own lawn care business which employed only students. He only used the incoming funds for fuel and equipment upkeep. The employees were greatly rewarded and appreciated for their hard work. Three of my sons, each June, were beneficiaries of their uncle’s discipline for hard work and they learned a lot while on the job.

“Write out the story” or “draw what you see in your mind.” As I sit here in my study writing this blog post, I am deeply grateful for those two strictures I frequently heard as a young child. Mother had a brilliant knack for inspiring each of us in our areas of creativity, but she also promoted the “not-as-strong” spots that needed a bit more attention so they would soon be strengths, not weaknesses. That was a huge part of “always do your best.”

Use your energies and make it a great day!

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY: So far, so good!

New puppy in the house? So far, so good.

At 5:30 AM, he decided instead of sleeping snuggled next to my shoulder, it was time to play by nibbling on my chin. There was no persuading nor commanding him to stop. I took him out to the front yard to potty, which he did, and after returning to the bed, he went right back to sleep, and pressed into my armpit. Although Bailey still refuses to warm up to Deeds, she will tolerate sharing the other side of me with him.

Mama Kay and I went to O’Charley’s for dinner and then she came over to introduce herself to Deeds.

Saturday was low-key around The Haasienda. I attended to some items around the house and worked a bit on some training with Deeds. ReBecca and Shane did a great job with him, and it shows. When I adopted Flyer, she had been in a loving farm home; when I brought her home at ten weeks old, she was well-prepped. Chief and Navi, who arrived at twelve weeks, were retrieved from a cold pen in the barn where they romped with their eight siblings on a floor of straw. There had been little interaction. Harrigan and Bailey were living in an outdoor kennel with their parents and only interacted with the family during feeding time. Erma, of course, had two previous families and was quite beloved at SICSA by the staff and volunteers. Chief, Navi, Harrigan, and Bailey warmed up fast, but I can tell a tremendous difference how immediate human connectivity makes with puppies.

It is nearing time to teach private lessons. It will be a fun atmosphere as students and parents greet Deeds. I have already received some emails and texts anticipating getting to see him for the first time.

In the past several minutes, Deeds has cleared the study of the other dogs as he pranced, danced, jumped, and howled at the stationary spoon on one of the beds. In the one attached photo, you can see him laying on the spoon.

Make it a great day!

MY DAY: Tuesday is a wrap

It was a semi-productive day but I won’t claim any prizes for trying to overdo it. The seven hours of teaching would have been longer but several students were out.

Deeds continues to get the “awws” when students see him for the first time.

I love watching him immerse himself in the routines of The Haasienda.

So much, at this point, is trying to keep up with the older four and imitating them. Deeds demonstrates a good deal of intelligence and learns quickly. Pott-training was started by ReBecca and Shane and that has cut out a good chunk for me. There are one or two accidents a day, but that is so much less than it was for Chief, Navi, Bailey, and Harrigan who were not raised in a house until they arrived here.

Deeds retains things, almost instantaneously. ReBecca had mastered “sit” and I’ve added on “come,” “no chew,” and “stop.” This evening, in two minutes, I taught Erma to “give five” and she promptly picked it up. The other seniors just kind of look at us with indifference.

I am off to bed with several documentaries I hope to watch before falling asleep. Deeds loves to join me on the bed, even if I am only tying my shoes. With myself and three dogs snuggled together, it is comfortable; however, depending on Deeds’ future growth, we may need to make adjustments!

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY: Have it your way…

After The Quintet ate, I let the older ones out into the backyard for potty time and took Mr. Deeds out front since there is light and it is easier to see if he is projecting the required items. It felt comfortable in my shorts and short-sleeve shirt and I am astonished to read on my weather app that it is only 29 degrees. It felt more like 45 degrees to me. Our highest temperature is scheduled for 51 degrees with minimal sunshine. Perfect.

As I finished some emails, Deeds took over the emptied cereal bowl once Erma had consumed the milk. For nearly fifteen minutes, Deeds went on the attack, barking at the spoon, and hopping around. I’ve not figured out why he barks at the spoon, but it is so doggone cute.

One of my college students currently has a class in multi-media communications and we often have lengthy discussions about his topics and how they relate to what he is doing with his piano music and compositions. Last week, his class was covering television commercials and we dug into some of Barry Manilow’s tremendous library of commercial jingles, some of which are still around. The 1970s and 1980s were great decades for commercial jingles and outstanding, memorable commercials. Justin’s comment was, “They’re so singable and some could have been full-length songs.” YES!

I could recite a number of the commercial jingles we discussed and went through the Burger King commercial, “Hold the pickle, hold the lettuce, special orders don’t upset us…” This morning, there was a funny meme on Facebook, referencing the old McDonald’s commercial, “Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun.”

I will always believe that I grew up in an incredible era of music. And I am ready to dig into my morning.

Make it a great day!

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Why the name Deeds?

I receive several queries each day regarding the origination of Deeds’ name.

I work in Guest Experience at Carillon Historical Park, a gift to the City of Dayton from the generosity of Col. Edward Deeds & Edith Walton Deeds. When I am the greeter and Wayfinder in The Atrium, my station is just a few feet from the animatronic figure of Edith Deeds.

Mrs. Deeds purchased a three-acre tract of land from the National Cash Register Company to build the carillon, a tower 170 feet in height that would shelter a cluster of 32 bells. One hundred and fifty sketches were drawn for Mrs. Deeds before she approved the final design from architects Reinhard and Hofmeister of New York City, designers of Rockefeller Center. The structure was fashioned of granite, steel, and Indiana limestone.

Mrs. Deeds said that her motives for creating the carillon were that, “In no other way can simple inspiring music be spread among an entire populace.”

Edward Andrew Deeds was an American engineer, inventor, and industrialist prominent in the Dayton, Ohio, area. He was the president of the National Cash Register Company and, together with Charles F. Kettering, founded Dayton Engineering Laboratories Company (DELCO), an early innovator in automotive technology.

Mrs. Edith Deeds died in her New York City Park Plaza Hotel suite on February 9, 1949. After a funeral service at their home, Moraine Farms, Mrs. Deeds’ procession passed by her carillon tower as her favorite hymn, “Lead Kindly Light” Deeds was played by Robert E. Kline, Mrs. Deeds’ favorite carillonneur.

Today, Carillon Historical Park is a 65-acre park and museum in Dayton, Ohio, which contains historic buildings and exhibits concerning the history of technology and the history of Dayton and its residents from 1796 to the present.  The historical elements of the park were the brainchild of Colonel Edward Deeds and Edith Walton Deeds. The major sections include settlement, transportation, invention, and industry.

When the carillon tower was built, each of 23 bells was inscribed with the name of a family member, with the “silent” bells bearing the names of deceased family members and ringing bells cast with the names of family members then living. Today, with 57 bells, the carillon is Ohio’s largest. The National Park Service listed the Deeds Carillon on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

Carillon Park refurbished the carillon in 1988, converting it from an electric keyboard-controlled instrument to a traditional, baton-keyboard mechanical carillon. The Park’s carillonneur, Larry Weinstein, performs live carillon concerts every Sunday at 3:00 pm from May to October.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: “Lead, Kindly Light”

I happened across this hymn while researching Edith Walton Deeds, a Dayton, Ohio legend who donated to the community a carillon tower which was the seed for what is now known as Carillon Historical Park. As the hearse, carrying Mrs. Deeds’ remains to Woodland Cemetery, paused at the Deeds Carillon, the carillonneur played her favorite hymn, “Lead, Kindly Light.”

The British hymn, with lyrics by John Henry Newman and music by John B. Dyke, was also a favorite of Mahatma Gandhi and is mentioned at the Gandhi Museum in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. “Lead, Kindly Light” was sung by a soloist, Marion Wright, on the RMS Titanic during a hymn-singing gathering led by the Rev. Ernest C. Carter, shortly before the ocean liner struck an iceberg on April 14, 1912. The hymn was also sung aboard one of the Titanic’s lifeboats when the rescue ship Carpathia was sighted the following morning.

Upon my first listen, I was mesmerized by the sumptuous, evocative melody. I fell as much in love with the lyrics. Ironically, I was introduced to this hymn the day before the seventy-fourth anniversary of Mrs. Deeds’ passing.

Lead, Kindly Light, amidst th’encircling gloom,
Lead Thou me on!
The night is dark, and I am far from home,
Lead Thou me on!
Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see
The distant scene; one step enough for me.

I was not ever thus, nor prayed that Thou
Shouldst lead me on;
I loved to choose and see my path; but now
Lead Thou me on!
I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears,
Pride ruled my will. Remember not past years!

So long Thy power hath blest me, sure it still
Will lead me on.
O’er moor and fen, o’er crag and torrent, till
The night is gone,
And with the morn those angel faces smile,
Which I have loved long since, and lost awhile!

Meantime, along the narrow rugged path,
Thyself hast trod,
Lead, Saviour, lead me home in childlike faith,
Home to my God.
To rest forever after earthly strife
In the calm light of everlasting life.

MY DAY: Only one assistant is present

This is an unusual scene: The Quartet has abandoned me and is napping in the bedroom while Deeds is napping just behind my chair.

It’s 51 degrees but cloudy. I’ll take the warmer conditions without the sunshine.

Not much on the docket, today, except writing for a few more hours and teaching from 3:30-11 PM.

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY: Monday, bright & beautiful

A beautiful day has joined us, complete with sunshine and 45 degrees.  I love it!

Deeds was a hit with the Sunday students, both in-person lessons and Zoom lessons. Deeds loved the attention and was especially interested in the singing and acting. It was adorable watching him investigate the monologues and singing.

Chief and Erma are old pooches and they do not seem phased by the little furball that landed in The Haasienda last Friday. Bailey and Harrigan, who are each extremely possessive of me and jealous, will growl, but make no effort to partake in Deeds’ antics and desire to play. During the night, Deeds crawled from beneath the blankets and cuddled next to Harrigan. I kept reassuring her that he liked his big sister and that she was being a good girl. Harry tolerated the snuggles as did Bailey a little later.

When I ask the group, “Do we need to go potty?” they all gather excitedly. Deeds dances in and around the bigger kids, still not certain what is going on. It is cute to watch him try to fit in. I believe as he increases in size, he will officially be one of the pack. One day, he will be leading it.

It is nearing time to teach. We have new musicals getting underway, auditions for musicals, prepping solo material for various high school ensembles, and college auditions. I love the busyness of the studio.

Make it a great day!

MY DAY: Deeds’ introduction to studio lessons

Deeds got to meet his first students tonight and he seemed quite interested in everything going on with the lessons. He also heard the piano for the first time and he was especially enthralled.

Here are some photos of Deeds with Taryn and Patrick.

MY DAY: Deeds discovers a spoon

Actually, Deeds sat patiently watching Erma play with her spoon. When she noticed she was being observed, she dropped the spoon near him.

With the spoon moving challenge conquered, Deeds has since moved on to other things.

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY: Puppy in the house

Yes. There is a puppy in the house!

Last night, Laura came over to meet Deeds and we spent several hours just watching the antics of The Quintet. She got to see, firsthand, the extreme neediness and jealous natures of Bailey and Harrigan. Bailey barely left Laura’s side and was obnoxiously demonstrative.

Later, we spent time in the study so I could attend to a few tasks. Deeds found his spot beneath my desk and napped for a bit. I turned down the thermostat but decided to decided to stretch out on the floor so all five dogs could have complete access to me rather than going immediately to bed. Deeds crawled onto my back and eventually found his way to the open area where I had one leg crossed over the other. Twenty minutes went by; it had cooled down in the study, my legs had fallen asleep, I had to pee, I was cold, and I was trapped beneath this ferociously adorable puppy.

In the bedroom, I decided to allow Deeds to find his place for sleep. After a few minutes of exploring, he wanted up on the bed with Bailey, Harrigan, and me. He immediately went to the side closest to the wall and snuggled up next to me beneath the covers. And that was where he remained all night – Deeds and Bailey on either side of me and Harrigan at my knees. I rose once for a bathroom break, and he was unphased by this disturbance.

At 7 AM, my daily weather notification sounded and rather than springing into action as they usually do, The Quartet simply slept. By 7:30 AM, I rose to prep their breakfast and saw five faces staring at me from behind the bedroom gate.

The morning routine was similar but altered as I prepared Deeds’ bowl for the hallway where I could monitor all activity and ward off any infringements from either camp. All went smoothly. I put him on his leash for the first visit to the backyard for potty time. He explored but did no business at that time. We will go out a little later once his digestive system kicks in.

Right now, I am at my main study desk with Chief and Deeds napping one foot apart. Erma is in the hallway, and The Sisters are on my bed. While there is all the newness of having a fifth member of our family, it’s turning out to be a very typical scene with me at my desk and dogs napping.

Make it a great day!

PHOTOS: my morning! Deeds loves being near Chief and Harrigan is as sour as ever.

MY DAY: Good deeds or Good, Deeds?

Well, this is the big news… we have a new member in The Haasienda.

For a number of months, I’ve been considering adding to the crew. This coming year, I will have aged dogs of 14, 13, 10, and 10.

A former student, Rebecca Hoskins Grubb, announced she and her husband, Shane, had rescued two male pups who are, today, thirteen weeks old. They are the same mix as Chief, Staffordshire terrier and lab.

Rebecca was a student when we lost Chief’s sister, Navi, in 2013 and like so many other students, greeted Bailey and Harrigan a few days later. It’s kind of fitting that Becca is a part of this merger. And, Becca and her husband are also expanding their family with a baby girl in a few weeks.

So, please join me in welcoming Deeds to our family.

Deeds is named in honor of Edward & Edith Deeds, legendary Daytonians who packed a historical punch with their many contributions, most notably, Carillon Historical Park.

So far, the union has been lots of sniffing and tail wags. Chief wagged his tail a lot, and Erma can’t stop loving on him. In fact, Chief has been smiling a good deal. The Sisters? Bailey is always in wiggle-fest mode so it’s difficult to rate her appraisal. Harrigan is unsure. But, Harrigan is always a tough sell.

Thank you, ReBecca and Shane!!!

The adventure has begun!

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Fireflies in the Garden

Fireflies in the Garden

BY ROBERT FROST

Here come real stars to fill the upper skies,

And here on earth come emulating flies,

That though they never equal stars in size,

(And they were never really stars at heart)

Achieve at times a very star-like start.

Only, of course, they can’t sustain the part.

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY: Friday, February 3rd

It’s a brisk morning with the sky already filled with light. The nearly forgotten sunshine is a most welcome visitor.

Tuesday evening, I set out the trash container for Wednesday’s haul away, as well as my big white office chair. The chair still functioned perfectly, but it was worn in a few places. I thought of taking it upstairs but I decided to set it out as it’s so large and a space hog in my study. By 7 AM, without posting a curb alert, the chair had been rescued. Ironically, I had several ads on social media for identical chairs. LOL!

Today is the fourth anniversary of my younger brother’s passing.

By 3:30 PM, I should be posting some big, exciting news from The Haasienda.

I’ve still a number of emails to answer and it frustrates me that I’m not as efficient. I hate dashing off personal emails as though they are not appreciated with my hurried response.

Yesterday was spent in bed due to an MS hug, a most unwelcome visitor that took the punch out of me. I watched a lot of documentaries.

It’s a big day at The Haasienda and I have some tasks that require my attention, and I’m planning on a nap to keep my energy paced.

Make it a great day!
