MAKE IT A GREAT DAY: Mary Lincoln, in memory

At 6:40 AM, the temperature is a muggy 67 degrees and shall meet 85 degrees as I begin my teaching day.

Sleep came easily to me at 10 PM, Saturday evening, but after a bathroom break at 2:15 AM, I was forever robbed of the remaining four hours of sleep. There will be no naps and I fear the day will be intolerable no matter how great I strive to make it. My body is just weighed down with fatigue.

One-hundred forty one years ago, Mary Lincoln, wife of President Abraham Lincoln, passed away in the home of her sister, Elizabeth, in Springfield, Illinois.  While her earthly woes and struggles ceased, the severe scrutiny of her life has continued. Even in 2023, we find First Lady Mary Lincoln a matter of debate.

“Over hill, over dale –” from A Midsummer Night’s Dream

by William Shakespeare

A wood near Athens. A Fairy speaks.

Over hill, over dale,
Thorough bush, thorough brier,
Over park, over pale,
Thorough flood, thorough fire
I do wander every where,
Swifter than the moon’s sphere;
And I serve the fairy queen,
To dew her orbs upon the green:
The cowslips tall her pensioners be;
In their gold coats spots you see;
Those be rubies, fairy favours,
In those freckles live their savours:
I must go seek some dew-drops here
And hang a pearl in every cowslip’s ear.
Farewell, thou lob of spirits: I’ll be gone;
Our queen and all her elves come here anon.

On with the day.

Make it a great day!
